Epithelial tissue is one of the tissues in living things, in addition to muscle tissue, connective tissue, and nerve tissue. Epithelial tissue lining the cavity and surface of blood vessels. Epithelial tissue is also found in all organs of the body, including the cornea of the eye. Epithelial tissue has three main forms namely flat (squamous), cylindrical (columnar) and cube (cuboidal). These epithelial cells can be arranged in only one layer or even in layers. In terms of age, the functions of the epithelial layer include protecting, producing fluids, absorbing and transporting certain substances as well as being a means of taste. One of the tissues built by the epithelial layer is the cornea of ​​the eye. The cornea of ​​the eye is the part that lines the front layer of the eye. The epithelium as the outermost layer in the cornea of ​​the eye functions to prevent foreign objects from outside the body from entering the eye. This layer also functions to absorb oxygen and nutrients from tears.

Know Corneal Abrasion

It is also possible for the corneal epithelial lining to get injured. Injuries called corneal abrasion are generally common, so often ignored as a condition that is not alarming. However, deep corneal abrasion can cause a non-smooth layer of the corneal epithelium or scar tissue. Corneal abrasion occurs because the surface of the cornea is scratched or scraped due to rubbing against foreign objects, such as makeup scratches, nail scratches, or broken glass. There are also some people who experience corneal abrasion or abrasions on the cornea due to contact lens wear and ultimately risk of corneal ulcer infection. In general, medical experts usually deal with giving topical antibiotics to prevent infection, but now the technique has been done on wounds that are considered minor or small. One other treatment is to close your eyes with special tools. But this method should not be recommended anymore. It is suspected that this method will actually reduce the supply of oxygen, increasing humidity which ultimately delays the healing process.

Preventing and Caring for Eyes to Avoid Corneal Abrasion

There is no better way to deal with an illness than avoiding it before it comes. So is the connection with corneal epithelial tissue damage that can cause corneal abrasion.

  • You are also advised to wear protective goggles when carrying out activities that may be exposed to ultraviolet light, such as hiking, skiing, or activities carried out outdoors.
  • People who work as mechanics, miners, and metal craftsmen are also highly recommended to use protective glasses because this work has a high risk of injuring the eye.
On the other hand, you are also advised to treat your eyes in the following ways.
  • Immediately check yourself when there is pain or interference with the eyes such as blurred or missing vision, pain in the eyes, red eyes and swelling due to irritation.
  • Wear contact lenses as long as they are recommended by your doctor.
  • Avoid using contact lenses when sleeping so that the eyes get an adequate supply of oxygen.
  • Do not use contact lenses when swimming.
  • Avoid holding contact lenses without washing your hands first.
  • Remove makeup before going to bed tonight. Mascara or eyeliner that is still attached to sleep causes irritation.
  • Never use eye makeup when driving a car, bus or train. This is to prevent corneal damage.
